After much anticipation, The US president, Donald Trump and North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un met in a summit on Tuesday, June 12, at a Singapore island resort. The New York Times reports the leaders shook hands warmly and then moved into a one-on-one meeting that lasted for about 40-minutes.

Prior to the historic summit, the US president said he expected that the meeting will be tremendously successful. He had also said he and Kim might strike a nuclear deal or forge a formal end to the Korean war in the course of a single meeting or over several days. On his part, Kim said through an interpreter that it was not easy to travel to Singapore for the summit. “It wasn’t easy for us to come here. There was a past that grabbed our ankles and wrong prejudices and practices that at times covered our eyes and ears. We overcame all that and we are here now,” the leader stated.

However some critics have faulted the meeting for what they described as legitimizing Kim on the world stage. But Trump fired back on Twitter, pointing out that the summit with the North Korean leader had achieved some measure of success.
